In February this year, users reported that some Mac computers running Apple’s Silicon M1 chip suffered from excessive SSD wear. For example, a user’s high-powered Mac M1 consumed 10% to 13% of the TBW value of his SSD in a short period of time, meaning that his hard drive would probably not last more than two years.
While Apple hasn’t commented on the issue yet, developers have noticed that the heavy SSD wear in M1 Macs now appears to have been fixed in macOS 11.4, and it has been tested that the issue has actually improved.
AppleInsider said at the time that it was likely not a hardware problem but a reading error, which they now say has been resolved.
In macOS 11.4, Apple is said to have fixed the statistics to ensure that the SSD health checker does read and write tests correctly.
In addition, Hector Martin, one of the developers working on porting Linux to Apple Silicon, tweeted that regarding the macOS SSD jitter issue, it looks like the issue has been fixed in 11.4.
It’s worth noting that these results are based on a beta version of macOS 11.4, which Apple has now updated for the official release.
