How to take screenshots on the iPad

Use the Home button to take a screenshot on the iPad

If you have an iPad with a Home button, such as an older iPad Air and iPad Pro or iPad Mini, capturing screen shots is easy.

The instructions in this article apply to iPADOS 14 and earlier.

Press and release the top button and the home button at the same time. You will see the screen flicker and hear the camera shutter sound.

The thumbnail will pop up in the bottom left corner of the screen. You can click to view it now or wait to view it later, as we explain below. If you choose to do it later, the thumbnail will slide down without you doing anything.

If you have an iPad that doesn’t have a Home button, such as the iPad Pro or the new iPad Air, it’s just as easy to capture screen shots.

Press and release the top button and the volume at the same time as the button. As with other iPad models, you’ll see the screen flicker and hear the camera sound.

Click to view a thumbnail image immediately, or view the following steps to view it later in your photos.

If you use the button above to capture a screen shot on your iPad and don’t immediately view the thumbnail, don’t worry. The screen capture is then automatically saved to your photo.

Open the photo on the iPad.

The left sidebar is displayed if you hide the left sidebar by clicking the upper left sidebar button.

Click to expand the media type.

Select the screen capture.

Your screenshots are treated as any other photos you took with the iPad camera. Select one to view in full screen. Then use the buttons at the top to share them with contacts, edit them with the built-in tools, or mark them as favorites.

If you click to view the thumbnail image now, the screen capture will not automatically save. Click Done in the upper left corner to save it.

If you use the Apple Pencil on your iPad, you can also use it to capture screen shots.

Please place your Apple Pencil on one of the bottom corners of your iPad screen.

Slide up on the Apple Pencil and the screen shrinks to a box.

Release your Apple Pencil to take photos. You’ll notice the screen flicker briefly and hear the camera shutter sound.

Then, your screen capture is front and center, which you can immediately annotate, share, or save using the iPad markup tool at the bottom.

Share or Save Screenshot To share a screenshot, click the Share button in the upper right corner. Select a contact to send a screenshot in Messages, or select an application such as Mail or Reminder.

To save a screen capture to a photo or file, click Finish in the upper left corner and select.

You can also use these methods to share or save screen shots after including comments using the markup tool.

Whatever your reason for capturing screen shots on your iPad, you can see how easy it is. Ask your friend which button to use, show your mom how to send a message, or save a picture of you when you get through the difficulty in the game. Screenshots make it easy!
