Introduction to Bluetooth 5.0

Brief introduction:

Bluetooth 5.0 is a Bluetooth technology standard proposed by the Bluetooth Technology Alliance in 2016 (officially launched on April 7, 2017). Bluetooth 5.0 improves and optimizes the speed of low-power devices. Bluetooth 5.0 combines wifi to assist indoor location, improve transmission speed and increase effective working distance.

Main functions:

For low-power devices, Bluetooth 5.0 has a wider range and four times faster speed.

L Bluetooth 5.0 will add indoor positioning assistance, combined with Wi-Fi to achieve indoor positioning accuracy of less than 1 meter.

L Low power mode has a maximum transmission speed of 2Mbps, double that of the previous 4.2LE version.

L Effective working distance up to 300 meters, four times the previous 4.2le version.

L Add navigation function, can achieve 1 meter indoor positioning.

L To meet the needs of mobile clients, its power consumption is lower, and compatible with older versions.

Comparison between Bluetooth 5.0 and 4.0

Faster transmission speed

The bluetooth 4.2 standard has a maximum transmission speed of 1Mbps, while bluetooth 5.0 has a maximum transmission speed of 2Mbps. Faster transmission speeds will double data transmission rates while increasing spectrum and energy efficiency, significantly reducing power consumption, and enable new and higher throughput applications such as audio, where a single packet of data will expand from 20 bytes to up to 256 bytes. This improvement will make Bluetooth a better experience in medical, fitness, outdoor, sports and other product applications. For example, for the most popular intelligent voice service, if the voice data is transmitted based on Bluetooth 5.0, the double transmission speed will strongly ensure the stability and accuracy of transmitted data, thus improving the accuracy of voice recognition, and thus improving the accuracy of user feedback and user experience.

Bluetooth 5.0 standard will have four times the range of Bluetooth 4.2, or about 300 meters.

This means that users can wear headphones far away from their phones, and large indoor venues, such as stadiums, villas, theaters, etc., will not be limited by distance, thus allowing users to expand the range of activities and improve user experience.

Bluetooth 5.0 broadcast communication capacity from 31 bytes of bluetooth 4.2 upgrade become 255 bytes, enhance the capacity of radio beacon will lead to better, in order to create more based on the location of the indoor positioning and navigation services, to achieve data transmission need for matching and wires, indoor positioning accuracy is less than 1 meter, improve indoor positioning accuracy.

For example, when shopping in a large mall, users will be able to navigate within the mall with the help of bluetooth 5.0’s indoor location function, effectively improving the accuracy of shopping and reducing the time and energy wasted in finding a place.

Lower power consumption, greater compatibility To meet the needs of the mobile Internet of Things, it has lower power consumption and is compatible with older Bluetooth versions. Major semiconductor manufacturers will design new MCU for Bluetooth 5.0 standard to meet the SIG specification. NRF52840 and nRF52832 from Nordic and CC2640R2F from TI Semiconductor all support Bluetooth 5.0. From the point of view of hardware characteristics, CC2640R2F is 10 times lower than Nordic nRF52840 and nRF52832 comprehensive sleep power consumption, which will have great significance for wearable medical, outdoor equipment, smart travel, smart home and other industries.

Lower power consumption means that when the user is fully charged, there will be a longer use time, or the same use time, reducing the number of charging users, greatly convenient users, no longer have to worry about taking out to play without power.

Bluetooth 5.2 is different from Bluetooth 5.0

New features in Bluetooth version 5.2 include LE Isochronous Channels, Enhanced ATT, and LE Power Control. These three new features are briefly described below.

LE synchronous channel

This is the core of the support of the next generation of bluetooth audio technology, previous versions of low-power bluetooth support only connection-oriented asynchronous communication link (ACL) and the connection mode of radio links, the former is applied to the peripheral device (such as a watch) between the center equipment (such as mobile phones) and two-way data transmission, which is applied to the unidirectional radio Beacon equipment information and Mesh network. LE Isochronous Channels are defined in version 5.2 of the next generation of LE based Bluetooth audio. The system includes Connected Isochronous Stream in connection mode and Broadcast Isochronous Stream in Broadcast mode. LE Synchronous channel lays the foundation for multi-stream Audio of next generation Bluetooth Audio and Audio Sharing application based on broadcast Audio Stream. According to the core specification of version 5.2, a synchronization group can include up to 31 different synchronous audio streams. In the broadcast synchronization mode, unlimited audio receivers can simultaneously listen to the shared audio streams within the communication range.

In order to realize LE synchronous channel, a new communication protocol layer, ISOAL, is defined in the Controller of Low power Bluetooth. ISOAL is used to convert service data units (SDU) that synchronize data (such as digital audio streams) to protocol data units (PDUs) at the Link Layer. The basic principle is that the length of AN SDU is much larger than that of a PDU, so one SDU needs to be divided and converted into multiple PDUs and rf signals need to be modulated for transmission when sending synchronous data. In turn, multiple PDUs need to be reassembled and converted into SDU and transmitted to the upper layer when receiving data.

Enhanced version ATT

In Bluetooth version 5.2, the ATT Protocol is Enhanced to quickly read Attribute values. This new function improves the efficiency of INFORMATION communication based on THE ATT Protocol and implements functions such as Fast Service Discovery. It is expected that fast service discovery will be used in the next generation of Bluetooth audio technology to enable the rapid exchange of relevant service information between audio devices.

LE power control

Bluetooth version 5.2 defines the low Power Bluetooth bidirectional Power Control protocol (LE Power Control), which can be used in a variety of application scenarios to further reduce Power consumption and improve the stability and reliability of device connections while remaining connected.

Iv. Summary:

1. Different transmission speed: Compared with Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth 5.0 offers twice the data transmission speed and an 800% increase in data transmission capacity. This means that those using Bluetooth 5.0 can transmit and receive more data at a faster speed.

2. Different working distance: Compared with Bluetooth 4.2, The bandwidth (transmission speed) of Bluetooth 5.0 is increased from 1Mbps to 2Mbps, and the transmission distance is increased by 4 times, that is, the theoretical effective working distance is 300 meters, and the low-power mode is also available.

Compared with Bluetooth 4.2 version, bluetooth 5.0 can transmit 255Byte packets instead of 31Byte packets, thus reducing transmission efficiency loss caused by interference of 2.4ghz band.

4. Compared to Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth 5.0 does not improve sound quality, power consumption is limited, stability is still affected, etc. Products using Bluetooth 5.2 will have one to many Bluetooth products, more stable connection, longer battery life, and improved sound quality
