Abstract

Recently, Aeraki Mesh, the open source Service grid project of Tencent Cloud, officially entered the CNCF cloud native panorama, which is located under the category of Service Mesh. CNCF Landscape helps users understand what specific software and product choices are available in each link of cloud native practice. Aeraki Mesh enters CNCF Landscape, Aeraki Mesh is officially part of the CNCF best practices for building cloud native.

What is CNCF cloud native panorama?

Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is an open source software Foundation dedicated to the popularization and sustainable development of Cloud Native technology. Cloud native technologies help enterprises and organizations build and run agile, scalable applications in modern, dynamic environments such as public, private, and hybrid clouds through a suite of software, specifications, and standards.

CNCF has published CNCF Landscape, which aims to help enterprises and developers quickly understand the overall picture of cloud native system and help users choose appropriate software and tools in cloud native practice, thus attracting the attention and attention of developers and users.

What problem does Aeraki Mesh solve in cloud native?

Aeraki Mesh is an open source project of Tencent Cloud in the field of Service Mesh, which solves the pain point that the current Service Mesh project only deals with HTTP/gRPC protocol and does not support other open source and private protocols.

Aeraki Mesh helps you manage any seven-layer protocol in a service grid. Dubbo, Thrit, Redis, Kafka, ZooKeeper and other open source protocols are supported. You can also use the MetaProtocol protocol extension framework provided by Aeraki Mesh to manage layer 7 traffic for proprietary protocols.

Aeraki’s key features:

  • Seamless integration with Istio is recommended by Istio Ecosystem integration. You can use Istio + Aeraki to build a full-stack service grid that can manage BOTH HTTP and other seven-tier protocols.
  • Supports Istio to manage the traffic of open source protocols such as Dubbo, Thrift, and Redis.
  • Support for managing traffic over private protocols in Istio with only a few hundred lines of code and no changes to Istio.
  • Supports request-level load balancing, dynamic routing under any matching conditions, global and local traffic limiting, and traffic mirroring.
  • Provides rich request-level performance metrics, including request latency, errors, and quantity, and supports distributed call tracing.

Aeraki has been applied in many large-scale projects such as CCTV video, Tencent Music and King Breaking Dawn, and has passed the practice test of large-scale online traffic during the 2022 Winter Olympics.
