“Live up to the time, the creation of non-stop, this article is participating in 2021 year-end summary essay competition”

preface

Nice to meet you 👋 I’m Flywith24. This is my 63rd post with the Nuggets.

This is my second year-end summary, last year’s summary talked about my learning experience and perception, interested partners can read: [2020 year-end summary] I am not a big man, but I believe THAT I am on the way to become a big man

This is my third year of graduation. This year I changed my job and became a member of the north Drift army. I met many new colleagues and made several new friends.

The first half of this article will introduce some of my working and living experiences in Beijing, and the last section will discuss how to become a “time management master” (don’t think too much about it, in the positive sense 😜), i.e. to improve your work/study efficiency.

Video version of the year-end summary here, remember one button three link oh 😉

At the beginning of the Flag

I am very happy that many of the flags set up at the beginning of the year have been excellently completed.

The Denver nuggets

Posted 11 articles with the Nuggets this year

Excavation is about to break 5000, I don’t know if it can be completed this year (crazy hint ðŸĪ)

Small column

Three small columns were released, with a little less updates this year:

Wechat official account

The official wechat account still keeps the rhythm of “Buddhist update” :

Knowledge of the planet

This year, many friends have asked me whether I have any communication group. Here is a unified reply: There is no communication group at present.

Most communication groups are either terrifically quiet or turn into water blowing groups. I think knowledge Planet is a good platform to accumulate knowledge, and high-quality questions and answers can also be seen by the latecomers.

North drift + change jobs

At the beginning of this year, I left the city where I had been studying and living for nearly seven years and started my life in Beijing. The interview process in the previous article to share a cross-city job interview experience, entry fast hand (non face) mentioned, no longer repeat here.

In this section, I would like to talk about my experience in changing cities, hoping to be helpful to those who want to change cities.

Choice of work/live city

Choosing the right city to live/work in is very important, so my advice is to make a plan as early as possible so that you have a plan to work towards.

For example, jinan is the city where I study. After graduation, I set a plan for myself: WORK in Jinan for two years, and then go to a first-tier city to work in a “big factory”.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a city, such as one’s future development opportunities, eating habits, climate conditions and so on.

At first, I had a hard time deciding between Beijing and Shanghai, but then I chose Beijing after my friend’s advice. I am from Jilin and my girlfriend is from Jinan. Beijing is not far from both of their homes. In northern cities, there is little difference between climate and eating habits.

Here’s my advice: follow your heart and visit the city you want to visit when you’re young.

Rent — Don’t trust blindly

My renting experience went well, but there were a few hiccups.

I came to Beijing in February. At first, I took over a house sublet by others in Freely, which was due in April. The apartment type is a two-bedroom, two-family sharing, but the price is far lower than the market price of two-family sharing. I later learned that the house had been made into a “two to three”, in which the living room was isolated into one room and rented out as three households. The living room may have been torn down for inspection.

Friends should pay attention to this renovation of the room as far as possible do not rent, because it may be torn down one day. ðŸĪĢ

My search began near the end of my first home, but my needs were clear:

  • Near the company
  • The price is cheap enough
  • Don’t share. You can live alone
  • A one-time intermediary fee is acceptable, but no annual management fee is acceptable

Then I found my current house, which is in a relatively remote location (so the price is good, remote but friendly for bike commute, around 15 minutes), with a one-time intermediary fee and a kitchen, bathroom and balcony.

My advice here is not to blindly believe in the group (or even the company’s colleagues group) recommended intermediaries, because many people recommended the so-called “reliable” intermediaries themselves are just to know, as for why hard recommendation, you know. I encountered three or four small agencies controlling the same apartment and was physically threatened when bargaining with them. When you come to a strange city, don’t blindly trust others, especially those who have just stepped into the society, you must be cautious and cautious!

Amateur Vlogger

Before I came to Beijing, I decided to record my life in Beijing on video for a simple reason: life is not easy and we have to have some fun.

Balance efficient work + efficient study

After joining Kuaishou, the work intensity is obviously higher than before. How to maintain the balance between efficient work and efficient study is a question I have been thinking about. The following are some of my thoughts, some of which come from the columns I subscribe or books I read. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

The second brain

I read in a column that the human brain is like the memory of a computer. Don’t store too much information in memory, which makes it less efficient.

I quite agree with the idea that the human brain is designed to create new ideas, store certain information, and use a “second brain” to do that.

Storing information persistently (second brain) so that memory (brain) can be released helps us become more productive.

For example, we can use visual way to record the daily work content and plan. When we need to read, we only need to search in the second brain. Of course, we can normalize the recording to achieve the optimal time complexity (lowest lookup cost) for reads.

The idea here is that we can use our second brain to “free up memory” in time (it doesn’t matter what tools we use) so that we can focus on our higher priorities.

Some knowledge is a liability, not an asset

Internet industry is becoming more and more “curly”, many people will be very anxious, so they will learn some knowledge that is not needed at present, in fact, not all knowledge is an asset, it may be a liability.

I do not mean that some knowledge is “useless knowledge”, nor “useless knowledge is a liability”, WHAT I want to express is that blindly learning knowledge is not necessarily one’s own asset.

For example, you may think that Flutter is hot, but you have no chance to use it in your current company or personal project. You may follow the tutorial and run some demos. Is this knowledge an asset? Chances are your future company still won’t use the technology, but you’ve already paid some time.

It is usually a more effective way to improve your skill level if you can continue to learn and practice while using basic skills once you have mastered them.

Here are some examples from myself:

At the beginning of the year, Drakeet shared a video of “Using custom ViewGroup to replace XML for measurement and layout” on the Knowledge Planet of throwline. As it happens, I have encountered some problems of stackage caused by inflate layout in my work, so I am making a new demand to apply this technology in my work. This gave me a deeper understanding of the Android layout and measurement process.

In September, I sent an article about not following the trend, comparing LiveData, StateFlow and SharedFlow using scenarios. The reason for writing this article is that I used relevant technologies in my personal project.

The other day I posted a post on “Android Detail” on WindowInsets. After learning this part, I took the initiative to put forward the requirement of adapting edge-to-edge for the home page of the company’s project, which is now in progress.

For new knowledge or skills, if you can use them while continuing to learn and practice, it is a more effective way to improve your technical level.

Reduce fragmentation time

There are many tutorials on how to use fragmented time to learn, but I have a different idea: reduce your fragmented time as much as possible.

Fragmented time prevents the brain from thinking deeply or working deeply. Take a computer example:

We all know that multitasking can be achieved by “time-multiplexing” the CPU, but unlike computers, switching is expensive in the human brain, and most people can’t handle multiple tasks efficiently at the same time. Therefore, I think it is more efficient to reduce my fragmentation time as much as possible and to complete the work through a block of time.

There are many reasons for time fragmentation: meetings, messages from your messenger, unexpected tasks, online bugs, etc.

Here’s my own example:

Before, I would subconsciously pay attention to the message reminders on wechat and the company’s internal communication tools, which made it difficult for me to concentrate. To avoid this problem, I stopped using my computer to log in to wechat. Instead, I used my phone to check it regularly and transferred the notification information from my computer to the secondary screen. After a period of “deep work” (say, 25 minutes), the message is processed uniformly. For nuggets app messages, I will find a fixed time to deal with them.

I usually arrive at work early, so the whole time I have available is in the morning. I spend this time catching up on emails, reading blogs, or thinking about what I’ve done yesterday and what I’ve planned for the day.

For larger requirements, I break them down into multiple sub-tasks, some of which are small enough to take advantage of fragmentation time, and some of which may require me to enter the “deep work” state, which I usually do after dinner in the evening.

We have a long lunch break, after lunch and walk, I still have an hour, the noon nap is not so long, I will spare half an hour to read my favorite books.

By reducing fragmentation and using blocks of time for productive work and study, you’ll find that the “boredom” of swiping your phone will decrease and your life will become more fulfilling.

Use Kanban to manage your time

I learned about the concept of “agile development” at my previous company, and Kuaishou also uses visual kanban to manage tasks. This year I tried to manage my time with my own kanban:

Above is a screenshot of the Notion official template on which MY own kanban is based.

I also prioritized each task, using an “advanced first, low level, peer low difficulty first scheduling algorithm” (in English: peer first simple ðŸĪŠ).

This is actually a form of the “second brain” I mentioned in section 1.

Communicate effectively with people

To improve the efficiency of communication with others, I have summarized several matters needing attention:

  • The premise of communication is the consistency of information, some scenes need some paving to eliminate the knowledge gap between the two sides of communication
  • Do not assume that there is no knowledge gap, first determine whether there is a knowledge gap between the two sides of the communication
  • A picture is worth a thousand words, and a few words are better than a long speech
  • The right questions are important

Here I would like to explain that “the right question is very important”, many people do not directly ask their own questions, but “beat around the bush”. For example, someone asks “what does xx do with this class”, but actually he wants to ask “what should BE done if YY functions are implemented”, and happens to see a possible related class.

A good question will make the person asked want to answer it, whereas the person asked will have 10,000 alpacas running through their mind.

Perfectionism through iteration

Many of us have perfectionism issues (like me), which can lead to bad production (or work) and a strong sense of frustration when it doesn’t live up to expectations.

Iteration is a way of thinking about agile development. Achieving perfectionism through iteration makes it easier to get results. If the results of each iteration are positive feedback, it will be a positive cycle and greatly improve our efficiency.

For example, when I was making vlog videos, I would only join a large section of material at the beginning and use the simplest editing tool to apply template editing. With continuous self-iteration, the finished product released each time was a little better than before, which generated positive feedback. I gradually learned some shooting skills, began to use professional editing tools, and the quality of finished products became higher and higher.
