I still remember how excited I was when I saw yCK following our public account.
Although the amount of attention we got was very limited, it gave us a certain degree of affirmation and made us all have more motivation. By the end of September, Xiao Front-end weekly has been going for almost two years. Later, we made our own submission plug-in by referring to the front end team of the cloud – front end tabloid system, and at the same time studied a set of automatic weekly publishing tools with unified format of multiple platforms. With the increase of the number of team members, the cohesion of the team is also constantly enhanced, just when we are planning the next breakthrough direction, the change came.

Starting from May this year, the entire education and training industry ushered in the largest wave of layoffs in history. Unfortunately, we are one of them.

First wave of layoffs. – Glad to stay
The news of the first batch of layoffs came out in June this year. At that time, I often heard about the news of the layoffs of frontline teachers in the small group of the group. Combined with some news in the market, it was hard for me not to think about it, and many colleagues have been ready to look for jobs since then. It wasn’t until one day in early July that one of the new UI sisters in the group was talked to and said that none of the employees on probation would be offered a full-time job that I realized the layoffs were really happening to us.
This time, all the probationary employees were laid off. Those who remained were relieved that the rest would be safe and hoped that the company could survive the “disaster”. However, the second batch of layoffs soon came.
Second wave of layoffs – Eager to get laid off
The second round of layoffs took place in August, when the company cut several lines of business. It was difficult to sympathize or envy as one colleague after another was summoned to a conference room to talk.
After the layoff, the whole floor lost a third of the people. Looking at the empty floor, coupled with the news such as “the company lost a lot of money by laying off so many people” and “the company has not been profitable for several months”, everyone worried about whether the next batch of layoff will be paid.
This has gradually turned the desire for layoffs into a desire. Such a complicated mood made colleagues have no intention to develop, and even the pictures on their monitors changed from Zhihu B station to Leetcode.
Our colleagues in the line of business even talked to the head of the department directly and said that they wanted to be laid off, but what the head of the department said made us have mixed feelings…
Third wave of layoffs. – Relief
Until, one day in September, the third wave of layoffs came. Finally, it was my turn to be called to the conference room. After the “torture” of more than three months, I felt relieved at the moment I got the compensation contract. I clearly remembered the words the head of the department said to us: “I hope everyone can go out with confidence. Don’t doubt your ability or blame the company too much. The layoff is not everyone’s problem, but the industry’s. When I returned to my work station, I received the wechat account of social security payment from HR and a document containing the internal promotion channels of several companies. On the day before leaving, the front end leader called for the last regular meeting of everyone. The content of the meeting was to tell everyone his experience of being an interviewer for so many years and the points we should pay attention to in the interview, and put forward specific suggestions for everyone. Later, he even helped us to prepare a document for the interview.
On September 24th, which was also the last working day for us to leave the staff, the whole department took a group photo on the rooftop for the last time.

“Embrace the change and look into the future” is a word my former leader often talks about. I, who turned up my nose at this word at the beginning of the year, finally realized the change. As programmers, if we don’t keep learning and staying competitive, it’s hard to get a good offer when things change. I hate to admit it, but that’s the way it is right now.
All my former colleagues have joined the new team one by one, some have gone to the first-line factories, and some have chosen to join start-up companies with high salaries.
After resting for more than two months, I am ready to start looking for a job. Facing the unknown, all I can do now is grasp the present moment first. In recent days, I have also written my resume and started to send it.
