On March 27, 2019, 996. Icu project was launched. The next day, the project reached 6W+ STAR.
The address of the project: https://github.com/996icu/996.ICU
The incident was fabricated by programmer net friends)
(Of course, the founder of Anhui Automobile network later refuted the rumor!)
Details can be directly open their website to see:
Official website of Anhui Automobile network: http://www.ahauto.com/
(Change the “U” to “O” and you’ll be surprised!)
By 24:00 on March 28th, star has reached more than 60,000!
The story:
A lot of people eat melon unknown so, to eat melon. Now let’s get the whole story straight.
The cause: A domain name, 996. Icu, was registered and the site was flooded with complaints about the 996 work schedule of some Internet companies.
Spread: This project without any code achieved more than 30K likes in just one day. 996.ICU means: Work 996, be sick in the ICU.
The 996 work schedule refers to working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week. The “996” working week has a minimum of 60 hours.
Explosion: This time, the programmers who have been repressed for so long finally explode! In one day, programmers widely know that there is this project can vent their dissatisfaction with 996, have crazy rush to this project down message, a time star skyrocketed, and crazy can not stop.
996 Long hidden crisis:
Even if programmers create a project like this, does it really work beyond venting frustration?
996 is still 996. Programmers have to work overtime if they want to get paid. But goose,, many primary programmers, neither high salary, but also endless overtime, this is now the status quo in China, most programmers can not avoid the problem!
In 2015, Li Junming, deputy head of the voice engine group at Tencent Interactive Entertainment Technology R&D Center, collapsed and died while walking with his pregnant wife. A year later, Jin Bo, 34, deputy editor of tianya, an online forum, went into cardiac arrest in a Beijing subway station. Last year, a 25-year-old employee of Shenzhen-based drone maker DJI also died of cardiac arrest…
Take life for money, in the domestic common, every year there are sudden death of programmers news, last year (18 years) and this year especially many, and younger and younger! China frequently broke, 25,26 years old young man, said no. Some city, just still play ball in the court, suddenly fell down, no longer up! Are you afraid?
Not enough sleep, no time and energy for sex, no real life, no life!
China’s tech companies employ too many people to “996 work schedule” is the norm
In the silent film “Modern Times”, film master Charlie Chaplin played a worker who had a nervous breakdown because he turned the bolts too often. Some young Chinese tech workers feel they are living in “modern times” in the 21st century, facing the dreaded “996 work day” — working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week.
Japanese executives flee to Japan for fear of overtime
Japan is a country not afraid of overtime work, most of them have a 10-hour working day system. Before I came to Huawei, a Japanese executive said, “What I am not afraid of is overtime work. Three months later, the Japanese ran away and said,” It’s terrible that you work overtime.”
As overtime becomes more prevalent in China, companies compete with each other to implement 996 or even 997 strategies, squeezing programmers to get faster product launches at the expense of their bodies. In the end no one is willing to stop, who stops who will lose the competition. So in the end hurt or broad honest programmer!
Programmers are mostly just tools for capitalists to compete in the marketplace
Young and strong, 24 hours courageously in the front line, you are the company’s weapon. When you age and decline, you are at risk of being replaced immediately! Programmers most of the time is also back pot man, the product can not be so online is you, the product can not meet expectations is you, the product problems are you! But when the product is successful, it’s because the product manager designed it well and marketed it well, not because the programmer, you just provided a tool.
How can we solve the problem?
If you don’t speak up for yourself, who will? No one is willing to stand in the storm, their rights and interests, can only rely on the majority of programmers themselves to fight for.
United: only the vast programmer united, we just have the strength to fight! It is not enough to unite. No matter how many people there are, without organizational discipline, common goals and division of labor, they are nothing but a rabble. Even those celebrity supporters can’t compete.
There should be industry leaders to lead the establishment of some programmers association and other organizations, so that the vast number of programmers slowly gather together to play a role in the organization.
A long war
This is going to be a long war, and changing the status quo is not going to happen overnight. We need to start with small injustices and inequalities. For example, some junior programmers are not paid, interns are tricked into work, they are fired after their probation period for no reason, and so on.
A war needs to be fought, but it depends on how it is fought. It is not a matter of rushing in with one’s passion and Shouting a few times that it will be effective.
Organized, disciplined, fair and just to defend our rights.
This is the biggest anti-overtime performance art of the year, and it’s a super project for everyone!
Continuity of hope
Hopefully, we can join forces to fight injustice effectively.
Hopefully one day we will not code for code’s sake, but because we are interested in it and love it.
Hopefully, one day, our future generation of programmers will appreciate some of the efforts we made together today 💪
The power of a single person is ultimately limited and insignificant, but a group of like-minded, have a clear direction and goal of people together, can burst out a great ability!
Watch: 👀 This year’s largest anti-overtime performance art ~
