On November 4th, At the Tencent Digital Ecology Conference, Tencent announced a major open source development in the cloud native field — Clusternet, a K8s multi-cluster management project officially open source.

Clusternet is jointly launched by Tencent and multi-point Life, QQ Music, Futu Securities, Webank, Kugou Music and Sanqi Interactive entertainment. It focuses on K8s multi-cluster management and application governance, hoping to make multi-cluster management as easy as surfing the Internet.

As the technological cornerstone of the future distributed cloud, Clusternet extends K8s’ powerful clustering, application and service capabilities to the distributed cloud in a componentized manner. It is compatible with all K8s ecological resources and software, helping enterprises upgrade their applications to multi-cloud architecture at zero cost, and facilitating the transformation of traditional industries to the future distributed cloud. The TDCC product of Tencent Cloud released in this conference is Clusternet as the core technology.

This open source is also a summary and innovation of Tencent’s internal multi-cluster governance experience, which is shared externally through the Clusternet project. Tencent’s internal Star Computing team has completed the management and control of nearly 10 million cores based on the multi-cluster solution.

Through Clusternet, no matter the cluster is running on public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud or edge cloud, it can obtain unified management and consistent access experience, realizing centralized DEPLOYMENT of K8s API and collaborative scheduling of multi-cluster applications and services.

As a new generation of open source multi-cluster governance software, Clusternet has unique advantages:

Lightest architecture

Aggregated APIServer (K8s AA) is deployed, eliminating information about storage and ports, and eliminating information about software and systems on different platforms, thereby reducing o&M complexity.

One-stop connection to all kinds of clusters

At the same time support the Pull and Push mode management K8s cluster, the first Dual mode automatic one-stop management mass cluster. Even if there is no private network channel, cross-cluster routing can be achieved.

Upgrade the cloud architecture at zero cost

The original single-cloud and single-cluster architecture business can be upgraded to multi-cloud and multi-cluster architecture with zero learning and transformation costs. It is fully compatible with K8s standard API, Helm Chart and customized CRD, without additional learning of complex multi-cluster API.

Rich and flexible policy configuration

Multiple types of configuration policies, including distribution policies and differentiation policies, can be flexibly matched to meet complex service scenarios and reduce manual intervention and repetitive work.

Convenient access to

Clusternet provides comprehensive interconnection capabilities including Kubectl Plugin and client-Go, facilitating one-click service access and managing multiple clusters.

Based on the concept of cloud native, Clusternet is fully compatible with native K8s resources, facilitating rapid business integration and use. Moreover, Tencent cloud native distributed cloud Center TDCC provides users with one-site hosted multi-cluster management and application governance services, delivering mature and stable cloud services closer to users and data, ensuring long-term platform operation, governance, update and evolution, and providing reliability and security compliance assurance.
