Everyone wants to set standards, but nobody wants to follow them. It’s human nature, and it’s a struggle for big vendors. Go with the flow will lose the right to speak, do independence and not have the potential to appeal to all.
There is no denying that anything standardized reduces the value of a given company’s existence, which is the root cause of many obscure technological setbacks.

WebDAV is a set of file management standards that you can think of as an updated version of an older technology like FTP, based on the HTTP protocol. You can use any webDAV-enabled tool to access and manage WebDAV server files and directories.
There are even tools for mapping WebDAV web disks to local disks. With it, your computer will have a few more hard drives out of thin air! Especially in today’s network speed is faster than disk speed, the advantage highlights.
This dish to traditional net, blow is huge. Baidu Cloud, for example, can’t advertise when people stop downloading its client. And don’t worry about replacing your classic archive with a gourd baby video.
Unfortunately, it’s not popular. Is the technology difficult? No, Apache and Nginx have modules that support WebDAV directly. Nginx, for example, can easily integrate this functionality by installing the libnginx-mod-HTTP-dav-ext module.
There are also many supported clients, such as the old WinSCP.
WebDAV appeared as early as 1996. It supports COPY, LOCK, MKCOL, MOVE, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, UNLOCK, etc., which is more than adequate for file management. You can see the long list of support.
But so easy to use technology, why in 13 years of net disk war, each big net disk first thought of is not how to carry forward WebDAV, but their own make a bloated, fat client? Even today, most web disks refuse to offer WebDav.
There is no other reason. If you do not force users to download their own clients, web disk will be reduced to a storage service provider, unable to do business over users! In the abnormal Internet environment of China, it is impossible to survive without business.
User experience is a paradox here. Money and imagination are king, and users are just guinea pigs to be played.
Even today’s OSS, why not provide convenient WebDAV? Because the technology is blocking money, it works but it’s not a good idea.
Better to build your own wheels than embrace standards, should be the unspoken conclusion of many a technology decision meeting. Just bitter users.
After all this talk, how useful is WebDAV? Let’s actually do this on Windows.
First, Windows itself supports WebDAV, but the WebClient service needs to be enabled.
First, in the Start menu, search for services and find the services hypervisor.
Then find the WebClient and start it. Almost instantly, you have a new skill.
Next, map a WebDAV service to a single drive letter, such as drive Y.
Right click on the computer or my computer and select Map Drive.
Check the necessary boxes. Fill in the address provided by the service provider. For example, if I’m using nutcloud here, I’ll put in the address it gave me.
The login verification screen is displayed. Most cloud vendors won’t let you enter your super password, it’s too dangerous. You need to generate a token password for your device, which can be done in the cloud management background.
After adding, we will find a drive letter on the computer. Next, you can operate the network disk just like a normal disk.
General WebDAV is very expensive, in China is everywhere under the supervision of the environment, it is illegal to keep a naked photo of yourself, so it is not safe.
I am currently using Microsoft OneDriver, which has 5GB of free space and can easily get 1TB of high-speed space for 40 yuan per year through various carpooling. I actually tested it and it was a breeze to get up to 10MB/s. It takes a bit of work to get to the web site, but once you set up an account, everything flows from there.
OneDriver WebDAV login address acquisition, requires a little technical means. After logging into the OneDrive background, I found this string in the URL, as shown in the red string. We’ll call it CustomerID.
At this time, the login address, is https://d.docs.live.net/${CustomerID}, and then enter your account password can complete the mapping.
So, if you have 10 different accounts, you have 10 different disks. But I don’t think you’ll have to, because OneDrive is installed by default in Windows 10.
In Linux, you can also use WebDAV directly, just install davfs2 tool. The more useful Linux tool is called RClone, and you can just follow the wizard down. You can hang these cloud disks on servers such as Ali Cloud, and quickly back up your data without copying it to your relay station.
WebDAV is a very old technology, but it has never caught on in China. Valuable but not widely promoted, the fundamental reason is the conflict with most manufacturers of cake plates. But for users like us, it’s a big boon. You have a clean client, or even a disk, can have the most pure disk, no longer need to face a messy popover.
Unfortunately, WebDAV has been abandoned for so many years that many of the standards and requirements of most current businesses are no longer met. Like foreign drive, iCloud, etc., are gradually abandoned WebDAV support, and then to write their own mapping disk, in order to integrate with their own management control end.
As for user-centric product design? That’s just a lie. The heart of the product manager is the user’s pocketbook. They get it right before they start designing products, so don’t fool yourself.
