Hu Xi, deputy CTO of Ant Financial, simulated cutting the optical cable of nearly half of Alipay’s servers. Results only after 26 seconds, the simulation environment of Alipay completely restored to normal. The technical core of this 26-second live demonstration of the self-interruption server is the three-place and five-center architecture scheme based on OceanBase.

The most daring technical exercise ever

This was a special technical drill planned by alipay engineers. Based on the real computer rooms of Alipay, they built two simulation computer rooms in each of the two cities to test the system stability when the two computer rooms were offline at the same time.

There is a TWO-DIMENSIONAL code on the large screen, so the audience can log in a virtual account to experience it. About 20 seconds after the two computer rooms were disconnected, the account page showed that the system was abnormal. After 20 seconds, all the audience could transfer money smoothly.

Hu Xi, deputy CTO of Ant Financial, explained that this is a drill. In the real environment, if alipay is deployed in two computer rooms in two cities and problems occur at the same time, the speed of alipay accounts running in these two computer rooms is minute.

It is understood that the machine room architecture is called “three places and five centers”, that is, five computer rooms are deployed in three cities. Once one or two of the computer rooms fail, the underlying technology system of Alipay will switch the flow of the faulty city to the normal computer room, and the data can be consistent and zero loss.

At present, the Internet and fintech industry commonly adopts the “two-site, three-center” deployment architecture, namely, two rooms in one city and one cold spare room in the other city.

In order to cope with city-level faults, Ant Financial completes the architecture deployment mode of “three places and five centers” through technological innovation on the basis of “two places and three centers”. The OceanBase distributed relational database distributes copies of data across five data centers, ensuring that every transaction is synchronized across copies in at least two cities. Therefore, when a city-level fault occurs, the database automatically completes a Dr Switchover.

Hu xi stressed that this architecture is not only about setting up two more computer rooms, but also tests a company’s ability of distributed architecture, database, middleware and related financial core technologies. And this is the result of the ten years before the establishment of Alipay. “One of Alipay’s technical goals is to ensure financial level system stability and security capabilities.”

Some people in the industry have made probability calculation, and the probability of simultaneous failure of multiple computer rooms in two cities is very low, and it will not happen basically. And even if it happens, the on-site exercise also demonstrates alipay’s strong disaster resilience. Hu Xi joked with everyone at the scene: “The drill told us both good news and bad news. The good news is that Alipay is safe and stable, and will be with you for at least another 102 years. The bad news is that no matter how many cables you cut, you’ll still have to pay them back.”
