Now, you can buy the perfect Mi MIX.
On September 11, 2017, The Mi MIX 2 was officially unveiled at xiaomi’s press conference. The PPT and the rendering images on the official website are so amazing that you can only think of praise.
But the positive reviews lasted only a few hours before the scandal erupted over allegations of fake publicity.
After we published “Fake Marketing: Xiaomi can’t Change it” to summarize the incident, many former Mi fans said: “Xiaomi’s disgusting marketing has made the Mi MIX 2 undeserved criticism when it should have received more praise.”
Zang Zhiyuan, a well-known phone reviewer who has just started checking in at Xiaomi, said on His Weibo account that “the first batch of tech media have all praised MIX 2”.
Apparently, “the first batch of tech media” is more accurately described as “the first batch of tech media to get xiaomi’s official test phone”, because even the first batch of products snatched from formal channels, like WepingWest, won’t get the real phone until at least September 14.
So is the Mi MIX 2 a full-screen phone worth buying, when marketing taints aside?
Given that the iPhone X is not yet available, this article compares the Samsung Galaxy S8 with the Mi MIX 2, the only full-screen phone available on the market.
First, the full screen:
To be fair, MIX 2 is still very beautiful when the screen is only viewed. Even if it is running on the bezel behind the bright screen, it is still a very beautiful phone as long as there is no other phone as a reference. That’s why many people still find the MIX 2 commendable after seeing the real thing.
The difficulty, however, is that the Mi MIX 1 has been out for a year, not in an era when sharp was the only niche brand making full-screen phones.
Put the Mi MIX 2 next to other full-screen, or bezel-less, phones like the Galaxy S8, and you’ll see that the MIX 2, which has a screen size just 0.19 inches larger than the S8, is a circle larger on the outside.
“Some people think the 5.99-inch Screen of the MIX 2 will be big, but the 5.99 inch screen of the MIX 2 is actually the same size as the previous traditional phones with the ultra-narrow edges and 5.5-inch screen,” Lei said at the launch.
A comparison of the MIX 2 and the iPhone 7 Plus appears on the screen, but the fact that the iPhone bezel can run a horse has long been a myth. I wondered why I didn’t compare myself to my brother like Apple does.
So we put mi 6 next to MIX 2:
At the press conference, Lei jun said the biggest significance of the “full-screen” phone lies in reducing the horizontal width, allowing users to have a larger screen when holding it in one hand. But by actual comparison, the MIX 2’s side frame is even wider than the Mi 6’s.
According to Official Xiaomi data, the MIX 2 is one of the most screen-based phones yet, but that’s still a slight step back from the original generation’s bizarre calculation of 91.3%. So Xiaomi didn’t say anything about the MIX 2’s screen size.
The main reason for this visual effect is that the S8 has a curved screen, while the MIX 2 does not. As a result, the S8’s bezels are hidden from normal use, while the MIX 2’s bezels are virtually in the user’s field of view.
As a full-screen phone, Xiaomi didn’t emphasize the screen itself either on its website or at its press conference. According to multiple sources, the first batch of MIX 2 will be shipped with A JDI screen. The 5.99-inch screen has a resolution of 2160×1080, and the 403 PPI is normal. Other phones on the market that feature full-screen concepts are pretty much the same at 6 inches and 2160 by 1080 resolution.
If this is the “full screen” that JDI has been rumored to mass-produce some time ago, a similar experience will appear on a number of other domestic brands in the second half of this year.
Dimensions and back
Intuitively, the 5.99-inch MIX 2 is a full circle larger than the 5.88-inch S8. The official size parameters of MIX 2 are as follows: 151.8 x 75.55 x 7.7mm; S8 dimensions: 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm.
However, this doesn’t affect MIX 2’s ability to hold the phone with only one hand, which is much better than MIX 1. But it’s still a lot lighter than the S8’s hand-held iPhone SE feel. In terms of controls, though, the S8 has a much wider range of one-handed controls than the MIX 2.
The Mi MIX 2 has a glass back design, which is pleasing on the first hand and can significantly increase the desire to buy if displayed offline. That’s why the Sony Xperia Z series has always had a glass back.
During the shoot, just turn it over, and your fingerprints are all over it.
But the glass back and dark background make the phone look like a fingerprint collector, holding it in your hand for less than a minute to look as good as the advertised image.
In addition, the glass back is more likely to cause damage. Over the past few years, every pink phone I’ve ever been around has ended up with a personalized smash tattoo on its back.
None of the Mi MIX 2, Samsung S8, and soon-to-be-available iPhone 8 and iPhone X can do that.
Also because of this factor, the glass back is not a particularly good design. Apart from Sony, most foreign phones have glass backs to compromise wireless charging. This is also the main reason for the iPhone’s switch to a glass back.
In terms of the design of the back, Mi MIX 2 is a whole circle bigger than S8, but the camera is still not flat. Despite the use of Super Black camera coating, the prominent camera still makes the back lose the overall sense.
Since the iPhone started using the highlight lens on the sixth generation, though, the public has become less averse to the highlight camera. But it uses a compromise design even though the camera quality is several times worse than that of the S8, making the prominent camera a penalty.
But the MIX 2’s back fingerprint location is more reasonable than the S8’s, and it can be easily accessed with one hand without the use of a protective cover. S8 fingerprint position is already familiar to everyone, in the case of the right hand is difficult to press in place, S8+ fingerprint recognition is decoration, almost impossible to press.
But no matter how good the back looks, Chinese mobile phone users have a habit of wearing a protective case. The Mi MIX 2 comes with a phone case, presumably to prevent a lot of users from breaking it after a while on the market.
The feel of the case is reminiscent of the greasy plastic of the Mi 1.
Performance and use
Foreign Android phones haven’t been able to adapt well to China’s poor app environment, and Samsung’s system has a reputation for being negatively optimized among consumers. The MiUI-powered MIX 2 has an advantage in this regard.
Friends who have used Xiaomi mobile phones will not be unfamiliar, although MIUI can not be called “the best ROM” but it is definitely “the most suitable ROM for Chinese users”.
MIX 2’s Mi Rabbit runs close to 180,000, reaching a standard level of 835+UFS. As I have more than 200 apps installed on the S8, according to the photos posted by netizens, the score of S8 8895 version is the same as that of MIX 2, and the score of S8 of CGOL Snapdragon 835 is about 10,000 ~ 20,000 lower than that of MIX 2.
But its outstanding performance in system optimization makes the MIX 2 smoother than the S8 in opening apps, switching apps and multitasking.
The Samsung I had in my hand was the Asia Pacific version, powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8895, which is slightly better optimized than the Snapdragon 835 version of the S8, and the new Samsung phone also has background management tools. However, after the installation of Alipay, wechat, Mobile Baidu, UC Browser, Toutiao and other Apps with Top 20 coverage in China, I still feel stuck. According to my observation, the background control is not strict enough.
In the battery endurance test of MIX 2, I simulated a relatively real operating environment. According to aurora data in the first half of 2017, 18 of the top 20 daily live lists were installed (excluding King of Glory and Sogou input method), and each App login account was opened and pushed, and a 4G phone card of Xiaomi Mobile was inserted.
After 16 hours of standby (2 hours without WIFI), 1 hour of 1080P video playing at medium volume, 45 minutes of weibo browsing and 30 minutes of high-frequency wechat operation, the mi MIX 2 has 62% battery remaining. Overall battery life control is very good, in the case of heavy use, one charge a day is not too big a problem.
When it comes to music and film experiences, the S8 is a little more portable, while the MIX 2 is even better on the outside.
This is mainly due to the MIX 2’s ability to use the earpiece as the speaker and the bottom speaker for stereo playback (although the sound size of the left and right channels is quite different). The S8, on the other hand, lacks stereo speakers and only has a mono channel when it’s out there.
But listening to music on the road, on buses, on subways and in public places like the office is a little harder — there’s no headphone jack.
Following the iPhone, Xiaomi abandoned the 3.5mm audio interface integration from mi 6 onwards. That means all your non-Bluetooth headphones will have to go through a little tail to work on the MIX 2. The iPhone solved the problem with wireless charging this year, and the MIX 2 isn’t there yet.
Take photos… At the event, Xiaomi claimed to use the same SONY IMX 386 sensor as the Mi 6, but the aperture was actually reduced from 1.8 to 2.0, and the night view was almost useless, with slow focus and heavy smearing.
In fact, there should be some X number in mind when buying MIX 2. Taking photos has never been Xiaomi’s strong suit. Even if it has the same specs as the Mi 6, that doesn’t mean the camera quality will be good enough to satisfy you. Simple on the three pictures, respectively, are outdoor cloudy, indoor fluorescent lamp, night shot —
It’s cloudy outside:
Indoor fluorescent lamp:
At night,
Just looking at the MIX 2’s photos, it meets basic photographic needs in well-lit situations. But there is still a big gap between Samsung’s S8 camera, which has no bulge.
Considering that after the release of iPhone 8/8 Plus, S8 ranked 6th in DxOMark, and MIX 2 lagged behind S8 significantly in the above performance, the statement that “MIX 2 finally has a good camera and will no longer be criticized for not being able to take pictures” is actually hard to hold water.
I had a hunch that many Mi fans would say the comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the MI MIX 2 doesn’t make sense, but that’s a misreading of Samsung’s price.
Currently, the gray market price of Galaxy S8 on Taobao has been reduced to about 3800~4100 yuan, while the price of Mi MIX 2 needs to be increased on Taobao. Coming six months after the S8, the MIX 2 should be more cost-effective than the S8.
But even at the original price of 3,299 yuan on the MIX 2 website, you can get one for as little as 500 yuan:
Waterproof, more colors, narrower visual frame, 3.5mm headphone mouth, more convenient to hold in a single hand, several high levels of photography, iris unlock, selfie without turning the phone, higher resolution, more heartbeat sensor, pressure sensor, can rest screen to see the time of the perfect full-screen mobile phone — Samsung Galaxy S8.
We can only hope xiaomi’s next generation MIX will be 500 yuan more expensive to catch up with the current S8.
