Today, Mozilla released Firefox 57 as a Beta release and officially named it Firefox Quantum. The brand also includes a new logo. Mozilla says that engines are important in browsers. That’s why Mozilla is releasing a new Firefox Beta, a completely reinvented modern engine. Since the name Firefox 57 doesn’t really convey the changes we’ve made, and the new Firefox browser is much faster, it’s called Firefox Quantum.
Mozilla says the Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as Firefox 52. It can speed up the browser by using Rust to rebuild components that are now more efficient. Historical versions of Firefox only ran tasks on one CPU core, but Quantum and later will leverage multiple CPU cores to make the browser faster.
By using a new CSS engine written in Rust, Firefox can use multiple cpus in parallel to reduce load times, something Mozilla claims no other browser can do. To further speed things up, Mozilla puts the tabs the user opens in the first place and uses a multi-process architecture. Firefox Quantum opens faster on some sites than Chrome and uses 30% less memory. The team also fixed 468 browser issues that could cause speeds to rise.
