I know you’ve been bombarded for a few days by Google I/O 2018, and the reason yoda has been sitting on it is because I’ve got the ultimate thing in the works, and it’s all about you on screen — Google and Udacity have announced the global launch of two co-created courses, “Kotlin Bootcamp” and a nanodegree in “Building Native Mobile Applications with Flutter”. Both courses are free of charge.

01 “Kotlin Starter Camp”

Kotlin Bootcamp for Programmers

At Google I/O 2017, Google announced Kotlin as the official programming language for Android development. Since then, the Kotlin developer community has been growing rapidly, and with well-known companies like Netflix, Pinterest, and Lyft already using Kotlin, the expectation that 2018 will be the year of Kotlin now seems very realistic!

A recent report from Realm also highlighted Kotlin’s adoption rate among Android developers, predicting that Kotlin will have a 51% market share by the end of the year. Stack Overflow’s 2018 Developer survey shows Kotlin as the no. 2 programming language.

Why is Kotlin

Kotlin has quickly gained a reputation for brevity and safety since ancient times. Developers realized that it enabled them to use object-oriented and functional programming techniques, and that it was 100 percent interoperable with Java

“Developers all over the world love Kotlin. We’re excited to see more and more developers get their hands on Kotlin and use it to build incredible Android applications. Udacity is the perfect partner to ensure programmers can learn the most important skills efficiently and effectively, with world-class courses. We look forward to working with Udacity to grow an amazing Kotlin developer community. “–James Lau, Product Manager, Google Kotlin Development Experience

“Kotlin allows us to express features and ideas in safer, cleaner code, providing a more enjoyable developer experience. Enables us to build better products for our users. -Nate Ebel, Android developer, Udacity

What can you learn from the course?

You’ll start by learning basic syntax, data types, variables, operators, control structures, and nullability, learn how object-oriented programming works in Kotlin, delve into lambda expressions and higher-order functions, and explore inline functions and single-abstract method interfaces. By the end of this course, you will be able to build your next project in Kotlin.

The course is co-taught by Aleks Haecky, Google’s training developer, and Sean McQuillan, Google’s Android developer advocate. Aleks is an experienced technical writer and trainer, and his love for Kotlin is evident in the course. Sean is a well-known Kotlin developer who travels the world sharing his insights into this modern, easy-to-learn language

02 “Building native Mobile Apps with Flutter”

Build Native Apps with Flutter

A recent article from Thegloor illustrates the challenges facing modern mobile developers in a good way:

“Users just want good performance, nice design and smooth animation. However, to achieve this, developers need to create new features without compromising quality or performance.” That’s when You need Flutter to help.

Flutter is Google’s mobile application software Development Kit (SDK). In this new course, you will learn how to use Flutter to develop high quality interactive native mobile application devices for iOS and Android.

What can I learn?

This course consists of two classes. First, you will learn the basics of the Flutter framework, how to incorporate widgets and states into your application, and how to use Flutter’s tools to enhance your development process. In lesson 2, you will use Material Design to customize your application and make your application interact with text input, gestures, and more.

Why F Lutter?

“Flutter is a Software development kit from Google that gives developers a new way to build native apps on Android and iOS from a single code base. There is a growing demand for skilled Flutter developers with experience, so we are pleased that Udacity has created a learning path to help Flutter developers build real-world skills. We are proud of our partnership with Udacity and the high quality Flutter training they are launching today. “–Joshy Joseph, Google vice President and engineering researcher
