GitHub announced several major updates today at Universal’s annual Conference. The GitHub Mobile App is officially available today, as well as code search and tipping features that are gradually being rolled out to all open source projects.

Over the past year, developers on GitHub crossed the 10 million mark and contributed more than 44 million RepOs, 80 percent of which came from outside the United States.

But it’s surprising that GitHub, the world’s largest code hosting site, didn’t launch a mobile App until today.

GitHub CEO said in a press release. “I’m willing to bet that within five years, more than half of all interactions on GitHub will be on mobile devices.”

It seems that the mobile version of the App has to be released.

GitHub for mobile is here

GitHub finally got a mobile app this year. In the past, GitHub projects could only be viewed on the mobile web, but now they can be viewed on the iPhone and iPad.

And the keyboard shortcuts that used to be on the PC are exactly the same on the iPad, making the iPad Pro a step closer to being a productivity tool.

GitHub for iOS provides the ability to view code, merge pull requests, respond to user questions, view error reports, and assign problems to other developers via the phone.

GitHub doesn’t add code to mobile apps, however. GitHub says collaboration is an important part of the software development life cycle, and coding is only a small part of it.

The most important thing for developers is that they will no longer be bombarded with notifications. The mobile version allows users to customize filters that filter out the most important messages, just like an email client.

IOS users will be able to go to the site, fill in their Apple ID and get an invitation to install TestFlight, which will be rolled out on GitHub over the next few months. Android users will have to wait for a beta package.

Other updates

GitHub Actions and GitHub Packages, previously released workflow automation and CI/CD solutions, have evolved from beta to official and available to every developer.

GitHub has added the ability to run Actions on ARM-based devices such as raspberry PI with a free self-hosted runtime.

GitHub has also improved code search, with new search capabilities that look for definitions based on context-specific semantic libraries and jump to sites in code.

The Beta version of the new code search experience matches precise results, including special characters, uppercase letters, and standard heuristic text searches.

To support the open source community, GitHub also announced the extension of GitHub rewards to code projects.

The GitHub tipping feature, “GitHub Sponsors,” launched in May and initially allowed users to donate to individual developers. Teams can now receive rewards for individual projects.
