Unlike any previous wave of inter-regional talent migration, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are no longer the only choice for engineers. Some new first-tier cities are becoming golden pits for them to pursue opportunities and dreams.
On July 23, Liepin released the “2018 Big Data and Research Report on Engineers in Key Cities in China”, which analyzed the distribution of net inflow of Internet engineers from the first quarter of 2017 to the second quarter of 2018. Hangzhou ranked first with an inflow rate of 12.46%.

Competition for engineers has become the fiercest battlefield in the competition between Chinese companies and cities, and Hangzhou has become a global harvester of technical talents.
In the inflow of engineers into Hangzhou, the most from Shanghai, accounting for 23.56%; Beijing and Shenzhen followed, accounting for 17.21% and 6.91%, respectively. This means that northbound Shenzhen contributed nearly half of hangzhou’s “Hang Piao” engineers.
Hangzhou’s inter-regional talent harvesting is not limited to China. According to BOSS Zhipin Research Institute’s “2018 Employment Choice Report of Chinese Returnees”, in the first half of 2018, among the most favored cities for returnees, The proportion of Returnees in Hangzhou ranks the first in the country, with an increase of 0.66%. In contrast, the proportion of returnees in Beijing and Shanghai showed negative growth, down 1.28 percent and 0.26 percent respectively.
Following the programmers from Beijing Xierqi, Shanghai Zhangjiang and Shenzhen Nanshan, there is another rising school of Chinese engineers: Hangzhou school of engineers.

The influx of foreign engineers and the integration of Hangzhou’s past Internet technical talents have jointly boosted the development imagination of Hangzhou’s science and technology industry.

“Flight from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen” is not news. The reasons are mainly due to passive choices: high housing prices, high living costs, strict hukou policies, etc. What is the reason for the group of engineers with high education and income to collectively “flee” and swarm into Hangzhou?
According to the employment survey report, the reasons for the rising sentiment in Hangzhou are the city’s open talent policy and the overall increase in happiness brought by the city. The happiness index of hangzhou’s engineers reached 30.68%, 10 percentage points higher than that of Guangzhou, which ranked second.
The second is high income. The housing price of Hangzhou is much lower than that of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but the income is the same as that of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Liepin data shows that there are five cities in China where the average annual salary in the Internet industry exceeds 200,000 yuan, with Hangzhou following Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, less than 40,000 yuan behind Beijing. But the price of Beijing CBD is actually 3-4 times that of Hangzhou CBD.
The third is the attraction of Internet giants. Liepin data showed that “The Internet and technology atmosphere driven by Alibaba” topped the list for attracting engineers to Hangzhou, with a voter turnout rate of 59.66%. Linkedin’s report on the attractiveness of overseas returnees confirms this. Hangzhou-based alibaba, ant financial and netease are all listed in the TOP30 companies most concerned by overseas returnees in the first half of 2018, with alibaba ranking first in the list.
It is reported that one third of the 36 partners of Alibaba are from technical backgrounds. Technical talents have a higher right of speech in Alibaba, Ant Financial and other Hangzhou Internet companies and have a large space for development. An engineer who has flocked to Hangzhou said that such a sense of respect is one of the reasons why Hangzhou is popular among engineers.
In addition, the benefits of being a hangpai engineer include a shorter daily commute. Liepin data shows that more than 67 percent of engineers in Hangzhou commute less than one hour a day, while the figure is less than 50 percent in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and nearly 14 percent of engineers in Beijing commute between 2.0 and 2.5 hours a day.
In general, in addition to alibaba, netease and other Internet giants, Hangzhou also has a large number of Internet startups. For example, the number of AI startups in Hangzhou surpassed Guangzhou in 2017, only second to Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. In addition, Hangzhou has the third highest number of tech unicorns in China. At the same time, Hangzhou has been economically prosperous since ancient times, with pleasant natural environment, livable climate, moderate living cost and healthy flow of technical talents, thus attracting more talents for the whole industry and the city.
