There are many ways to make snow effect, such as: \
1. Material method
Overlay with snowflake material. Usually just change the layer blend mode to filter, simple and efficient.
2. Filter method
Use point filter, lattice filter, etc. to produce snow dot effect, and then combine with Gaussian blur, motion blur and other filter optimization effect.
3. Strokes
Use custom brush preset layering for maximum flexibility and control.
This article describes how to customize the brush preset and manually draw the snow layer by layer.

Steps and Instructions
- Create a brush preset
1. New document, 500 x 500 pixels, 72 pixels/inch, white background.
2. Draw two black circles of different sizes as shown below.
3. After selecting all, perform the Ps menu: Edit/Define Brush presets.
4. Open the Brush Settings panel for brush Settings.
(1) Shape dynamic: set size jitter, Angle jitter, roundness jitter, etc., as shown in the figure.
(2) Spread: select “two axes” and increase the spread value.
(3) Pass: change the opacity value.
(4) Pen tip shape: change the spacing value.
5. Open the control menu of brush Settings panel and create a new brush preset named “Piaoxue” for later use.
- Paint drifting snow in layers
Open the photo to which you want to add the snow effect, create a few blank layers, you can name them: Near, Middle, far, Focus, close, etc. Then draw the snow on the different blank layers with different sizes of snow brushes (white).
Several principles and methods
1, near big far small
By changing the brush size.
Near real far virtual
Through different degrees of ambiguity to achieve. Ps menu: Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur.
3. Focus is clear and out of focus is fuzzy
The focus layer can be applied with or more than one diffusion filter. Ps menu: Filter/Stylize/Diffuse.
4. Move fast near the camera
For the near lens layer consider using motion blur, the Ps menu: Filter/Blur/Motion Blur, combined with Gaussian blur.
Finally, use the eraser tool to erase areas you don’t want covered with snow. Or use a layer mask.
You can also combine all the snow layers into a layer group and copy the layer group to another photo for a quick snow effect.
