This column is new to me. Every time I post here, I must extract important ideas from books I have read and think are better, which involve “hard knowledge” and “soft knowledge”, and then share them with you.
The reason why IT is called “dull brain” is that THESE contents are summarized by myself through reading and thinking, in the hope of colliding and communicating with others in this way, rather than simply saying what the book is about.
I wrote this article on September 1st after reading the Method of Reading at Full Speed. I did a lot of work in order to make the article substantial and amenable to scrutiny.
Below, please start reading.
When it comes to reading, the concept of “speed reading” often comes up. People often feel that they don’t have enough time, so they can’t settle down to read properly. So over time, most people have come to think of reading as something that can be done quickly.
Like most people, I thought so too. So I did two studies on the topic of “speed reading”, respectively in April last year and August this year. The conclusion is the same the first time and the second time: skip the unimportant parts, read the important parts intensively, and take notes.
However, this conclusion is not very useful, because there is no way to know what the “unimportant contents” of “skipping over unimportant contents” are. We can only make subjective judgments by reading the contents of the table of contents and simply browsing through them, which will miss a large part of the content that may be important.
Later I read a lot of books on speed reading, including: Yue Reader, How to Read a Book, So Reading Is Enough, How to Read a Book (Hu Shi), How to Read a Book Effectively, How to Read Efficiently and so on.
One of the unifying ideas is to read differently depending on the type of book.
I personally feel that this view is also a useless conclusion, for reasons explained below.
Later, I searched through keywords and found a book about high speed reading, which is the book we are going to talk about today — High Speed Reading.
The author is a reputed international authority on neuro-linguistic programming and fast learning (but I didn’t find much about it, just a brief introduction).
The book mentions that reading is divided into five steps: preparation, preview, video review, review and activation.
- Preparation: Relax and ask yourself why you are reading the book;
- Preview: judge whether the book is worth reading by looking through the table of contents and preface;
- Image browsing: Focus your attention through the “Orange method”, keep a steady state, and start to turn the pages in a rhythm (1-2 seconds interval);
- Review: clear the structure of the book, find the key words in the book, and then ask questions;
- Activate: Find the answer to your own question.
After reading the book, I wanted to know the biggest question: Does video browsing work? One page per second, remember?
To test this idea, I did a lot of research. I found that there really is such a training class offline, which is opened by foreign well-known experts, as well as video propaganda. After watching the video, I thought it was a little bit believable. But since it is their official propaganda, of course, it is only “good”. So I consulted several senior readers to discuss this issue.
The elder Warhawk believes that “image browsing” is actually a placebo effect.
Early promoters @ TongMuChen xuan Specially wrote articles to criticize the reading method, warned you not to waste time on this method (here I said a strange phenomenon: book book very well in foreign countries, but I’ll find a lot of information, specific how popular is not found, I don’t know whether I have a puff of ingredients in it.) .
I know, even so, in fact, many people are still fantasizing about speed reading, even The teacher Wan Weigang had spent a month to learn speed reading. The turning point came in the second month when he learned speed reading and began to implement it. He saw a piece of content on the Internet and thought it was familiar, but he couldn’t remember where he had seen it anyway. Later he checked it and found it was from a book he had read through speed reading last month.
At this point, he abandoned all speed-reading methods and continued to read carefully.
And I don’t think there should be such a thing as different books being read in different ways. Because no matter what books, since it is their own choice and feel worthy of reading, it must have its excellent place, so you should carefully read, or would rather not start. Because if you speed read a book and can’t remember it, why waste time reading it?
Then there will be a problem, some people will say: I read carefully can not remember ah!
So I think the book “High speed reading Method” or desirable, but in fact, this point of view has been mentioned in other books, the earliest proposed by Su Shi. That’s how I’ve always read books: twice.
Ask yourself why you are reading this book in the first place. When you know why, start reading.
The first time: first through browsing the table of contents to understand the structure of the book, and then list their own reading the book to know the answers put forward relevant questions, and then read, draw the key points in the process (if there is any feeling can be written on the edge);
Second time: specifically on these key content and the answer to the question to do a comb again, and then organize into the relevant notes.
So this is the reading notes that I made through my own reading method. Without looking at my notes, I can tell three or five stories of what I have read; But if you look at your notes, it’s okay to say seven or eight layers. (I don’t recommend mind maps, I did it because it’s already in the book, and I’m just suggesting it.)
While writing this article, a reader asked me how often I finish a book. Although I now read faster than before, but I don’t want you to set a limit to reading time, natural relaxation to read, don’t give yourself too much pressure, read more.
Then use this content to talk about a phenomenon, although not much to do with speed reading, but more important is to let you do not easily deceived.
Recently, more and more “readers” become active and successfully learn to bloom everywhere. Pseudo scholars carry out “thought kidnapping” in the way of “reading”. In the public account of this kind of people, the updated content every day is to tell readers that they can read a book a day, but the content of the public account every day is: Success learning (chicken soup), there is not the slightest bit of useful content, even if there is, it is just copying ideas from the book. But the fans are huge.
This proves that the market and readers love these types of people because they are easy to deify and promote.
To give you an example of why such images are easy to deify and promote: A recent topic on Zhihu called “What is the difference in temperament between people who read a lot and those who don’t?”
One of the answers was interesting. He mentioned Gao xiaosong. Gao xiaosong’s appearance is certainly the one that no one would choose in any choice of mate, but if you consider that he is well-read and talented, the transformation of his image will be the difference between the two photos below.
If you don’t read looks like this left, even if the lights are off, I believe that no girls dare to kiss (of course, rich for another word).
Read a lot and you look like the left, but to girls you look like the right.
This is all the more reason why we should stop chasing after people for nothing. We should like people who are truly talented, but we should never be deceived by fake scholars.
It’s not uncommon for someone to post something like, “Stupid, you’re great, you read so many books.” Do not think so, in fact, it is really like watching drama and playing games, I do not think that a person watched hundreds of dramas, played dozens of games, there is anything worthy of worship. Unless, he plays/sees the name and makes a small contribution to human development, otherwise, there is really nothing to worship.
My summary
Generally speaking, this book can explain a phenomenon: the so-called “readers” who are active in the market at present basically follow the “five-step” approach to reading methodology. I’ve seen a lot of reading tips shared by people who steal concepts from the book, but as I mentioned above, it doesn’t really work.
I don’t think you can learn anything by reading a book quickly. Here’s a striking example: fast-forward five times to watch a movie. You may know the plot, but you’re missing the point.
While talking to your friends about the movie, you might be able to say a few words about the storyline, but you won’t be able to get a word in edging out when they come up with a particular turning point or how deep the characters are, which is often the real selling point of a movie (not the plot). Can think back to life is there often such a situation.
Therefore, no matter what to do, I will be very serious preparation, very attentively to taste. A book, I want to record what I think good, and write down my feelings; A movie. I want to take screenshots of it and write about it.
Private opinion: Reading is something that starts from the heart. Whether it is to learn some knowledge or to cope with some work, it is for a certain purpose, and this purpose is not “reading for speed reading”. Do not be affected by the concept of fast response advocated by some people in the Internet era.
We say that to make products, we need to actively respond to market demand, quickly carry out product iteration, and ensure that users use the product to efficiently complete tasks. That’s true, but the market is full of companies that fail, and those that fail probably fail because of a focus on “fast.” So some people say that times have changed, that we’re getting information faster, and the people who say that tend to be businessmen.
If you really want to make a change, you should calm down and think about why you want to read a book, and then pick up the book and read it slowly. Real speed reading is a natural and efficient ability to read as your comprehension improves as you read more books.
END.
