Not long ago, I attended Huawei’s Dev Summit 2020 developer conference and heard some sharing about 5G. I happen to have some thoughts on 5G recently, and I would like to share them with you here.
What are the 5 g
Rather than enumerate arcana, 5G is simply the next generation of communications technology, with faster speeds, lower latency, lower costs, larger systems and larger device connections. To put it more bluntly, on the surface, it will be faster for you to download the King of Glory update pack on your 5G phone, and you will no longer be able to play the Honor network.
Views on 5G
There are roughly three views on 5G:
The first group is confused. I wonder what changes 5G will bring.
The second group is the pessimists. That 5G is just 4G improvement and optimization, just to improve the speed of the network more than ten times, 4G is enough for themselves.
The third group is the optimist. That 5G is a revolutionary breakthrough that will reshape the way we live, work and do business, bringing a whole new face to the world.
So which one is right?
If we look at what people thought about 4G back then, it’s interesting to look at the past from the height of the future.
Go to Baidu, search for “What 4G can do” and set the time back 12 years
And then a miracle happens, and we see:
Some people, feel that laptop use 4G to take up a USB port
Some people think that 4G will not rise at all in 2020, so we should do our best in 3G.
Still have, think 4G brings is can watch hd video!
But then someone said, 3G is enough!
Some people are more concerned about the problem of fees, even before the collapse of dangdang founder Li Guoqing, 14 years also micro blog open diss.
What we’ve seen in the past is that we either didn’t believe 4G was going to be as widespread as it was, or we only saw a limited use for 4G (like watching video).
China’s 4G started lab testing in 2009, outfield testing in 2010-2011, commercial trial in 2012, commercial commercial in early 2014, and now let’s go back to the end of 2019 to look at these years, 4G has brought tremendous changes to society:
We used to go on business trips, and every city we went to, we had to book air tickets and hotels on the computer. When you arrive at a place, buy a map of the place and ask the locals for good food. Take a taxi or a bus or subway to get out; And the bag chuai tens of thousands of dollars, always worried about losing…
Years later, we will use mobile phones to buy air tickets, ctrip to book hotels; When you arrive at a place, call a Didi taxi with your mobile phone. Baidu or Amap navigation is available everywhere. Use Dianping to search places for meals; Everything is Alipay or wechat pay, no more cash…
And the sudden emergence of short videos, live streaming platforms… In just a few years, the world has changed completely.
The popularity of 4G has directly overturned all foreseen and unforeseen business models of social networking, e-commerce, media, travel, food delivery, mobile payment and so on.
Before that, many people’s perception of 4G was simply “faster Internet speed”. We see a faster Internet connection, but I did not see the rise of mobile payment, anticipated the development of online video, but I did not see the outbreak of the short video, even ma will underestimate trends, such as 4 g in 2013 on the eve of Mr Ma is the outbreak of the sensed the short video, tencent has produced slightly depending on the product, but must go away, When the rise of Douyin, clap red thigh to regret it is too late.
You might say that as young people, our perceptions of 5G are completely different from those of our predecessors, but look at how some people think about 5G today and how they thought about 4G back then:
Clay Shirky, author of Cognitive Surplus, says:
The more opportunities that new tools offer, the less likely it is that anyone can extrapolate from the past to the future. In the early stages of the diffusion of a new tool, it is too early to try to understand how (in what ways and to what extent) its use will change our society: big changes lag. — We’re so bad at predicting our future behavior.
What can 5G bring us
5G, in fact, is just a piece of technology that will allow us to connect faster, but it will change much more than that.
Looking back at the 4G era will also make us sure of one thing — whether we can see it or not, the subversion 5G brings to the entire Internet will be as wonderful as the 4G era. There will be countless unexpected software and hardware pushed in front of people, there will be countless unexpected business models appear again, and everyone will re-flood into this new technology carnival, and gradually get used to the new way of life brought by technology.
What matters today is not the new capabilities we have, but how we turn those capabilities into opportunities, both technologically and socially. And what we can do with those opportunities.
The technology of 4G era is 4G, and the opportunity is short video, live broadcasting platform, mobile payment…
5 g?
Compared with 4G, 5G is more significant in its three typical application scenarios: eMBB (enhanced mobile broadband), mMTC (mass machine communication), uRLLC (ultra-reliable low-delay communication).
Let’s take a guess:
VR
One of the reasons why VR technology has not been applied on a large scale at present is that 4G technology cannot support the comprehensive popularization of VR. In the 5G era, VR technology will be more widely applied, VR games, VR learning, VR shopping, VR medical treatment will come into reality.
Intelligent driving
At present, intelligent driving has emerged, and in the 5G era, it will gradually mature. At present, only automatic driving cameras can be installed on cars. In the future, it will be possible for our roadside equipment, in-car equipment and vehicle-road coordination and interconnection. For example, when you go out and plan your route, the vehicle will automatically judge the road condition through the intelligent kilometer system before departure and make the optimal route. At the same time, your route information will be transmitted to the cloud as a reference for other vehicles to choose the route.
Smart cities connect everything
From the first generation to the fourth generation of mobile communication technology, communication between people is all around, and the smart life in the real sense needs to realize the “Internet of everything”, not only the connection between people and these devices, but also the connection between these devices. The current 4G network offers ideal speeds, but its capacity is too limited to connect everything. The substantial increase in 5G network capacity provides the conditions for realizing the “Internet of everything”.
In the 5G era, more infrastructure will be connected by mobile networks, such as street lights, water meters and trash cans. City managers can accurately know the state of each infrastructure, such as which street lamp is broken, which section of water pipe is leaking, and which trash can is full, which is of great significance for improving the efficiency of city operation and making people’s life more convenient.
Of course, as Clay Shirky points out, the more opportunities new tools offer, the less likely it is that anyone can extrapolate from the past to the future. There must be more scenarios that we can’t anticipate, and there must be more opportunities that will emerge.
5G, the future is here.
Now, do you still think 5G is just about faster Internet speeds?
